History of Laurentien

The Passion for the Printing Industry

It all started in 1971 with a man passionate about fine arts and printing. Back then, we were a small Quebec family business located in the Laurentien borough of the city of St-Augustin-de-Desmaures (hence the name Laurentien). Over the years, the owners' interest in creating beautifully printed materials led to Laurentien receiving several Gutenberg Awards. This award is bestowed upon individuals or institutions in recognition of the excellence in their contributions to book art. During that period, our client base comprised small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), government entities, and educational institutions seeking various printing products.

Our Work with Schools Begins

Over time, a new opportunity arose with school boards throughout Quebec and ultimately across Canada. Laurentien entered the yearbook and student planner business, giving rise to the products that now define our reputation. Over the decades, our continued collaboration with schools, school boards and affiliated associations have created an invaluable partnership for all parties involved.

What’s the story with the Dalmatian featured in your marketing materials?

Considering the strong bond we had fostered with our school teams; we concluded that a dog would be the perfect symbol to represent this relationship (i.e. man’s best friend). During the process of developing the new logo, one of our designers observed Boogie, the Dalmatian owned by the company's founder, leisurely lounging in the Laurentien office. In that moment, this canine companion became the central focus of our brand, and the rest, as they say, is history!

As a division of Marquis Book Printing, an 80-year-old business and Canada's largest integrated book manufacturer, Laurentien takes great pride in our rich Canadian heritage. We employ 600 Canadians each year, in addition to partnering with Canadian companies to manufacture our products. With 500,000 sq. ft. of production, translating to a book capacity of over 100 million units annually, we possess strong purchasing power that ensures the availability of raw materials such as paper and cardboard for our book covers. As the printing industry has evolved, we have been able to fulfill all our commitments and satisfy our customers because of the stability of our domestic supply chain.

Over the years, we have cultivated stable and long-term partnerships with various Canadian companies located near our clients and production facilities. We meet annually to prepare for the upcoming production season, reviewing the previous season and implementing strategic improvements.

Embracing Ecological Sustainability in Every Endeavour

Our unwavering commitment to ecological sustainability is at the core of everything we do. We are committed to reducing the environmental impact at every stage of our process, including paper usage, printing, binding, and logistics. From our latest partnership with EcoSchools Canada to our long list of eco-certifications, we are steadfastly dedicated to environmentally conscious practices. We implement best environmental practices in all our production facilities. For example:

  • Paper waste is 100% recycled.
  • Our products are printed on demand to avoid overproduction.
  • Our inks are water-based, without chlorine or elemental chlorine, which facilitates paper and ink recycling, compared with oil-based inks.
  • We have launched the Ecoplus, an almost zero-plastic student planner made entirely in one location. Less transportation means a smaller carbon footprint.
  • Our plants and our subcontractors are located close to our customers, which in turn reduces our carbon footprint.

Encouraging People Living with Functional Limitations

We proudly encourage and support organizations who employ people with special needs by having all our student planners assembled and spiraled at their facilities. The joy reflected in their smiles during our visits underscores the significance of fostering a sense of achievement and trust. These invaluable partnerships have endured for over two decades, and we are committed to their continuation for many years to come.

Supporting Local Non-Profit Organizations

In our ongoing efforts to support local NPO’s we provide complimentary space in our student planners for organizations aligned with our core values. We proudly endorse Alloprof for homework assistance and EcoSchools Canada for promoting climate-friendly habits. Through showcasing these organizations, we aim to offer students with enriching educational content.
